[Niki isn't in the mood to rest, but it doesn't hurt to take a look at the place they'll be calling home for now. He doesn't get very far in his exploration of the apartments before a phuji crosses his path, presumably being chased out of someone's room. Maybe it's yours?

Niki has no idea what it is, but his eyes light up when he sees it anyway.]

[Niki isn't good at a lot of things, but if there's one thing he can do, it's foraging, so when the bakers ask for help, Niki is almost too enthusiastic to sign up. If anyone is nearby considering a job, Niki turns to them with enthusiasm:]

Are you thinking of heading to the ruins, too? I'll do anything when I'm hungry, but I'd like it a lot better if I didn't have to go alone!

[A few days have passed since their arrival and nothing has changed. They're still stuck here. Niki feels sick, and it's probably the lack of food, but it's not just that.]

Hi, hi~! If anyone can hear me, please reply! I've got a really huge favor to ask. I think food probably isn't going to be really easy to get here, so... If anyone is into hunting, could you maybe consider bringing me along? I don't like doing unnecessary things, but I think it might be important for me to learn. [...] Um, see, I'm a chef, so I think this might be the best way for me to help out around here.

[The SS, huh? That's pretty far past what he remembers of home.]

[What should he say... if he responds with what he does actually remember, it will sound pretty weird since his hair should still be long. Augh, he is going to have to come clean a little.]

The last thing I remember of home is ...us successfully performing our live in early Autumn. Feather touch.

The last thing I remember before waking up here is ...performing some sort of dangerous ritual in the woods and ...I am certain that I did not survive.

[For all that Niki insists he isn't very smart, Mayoi's meaning doesn't go over his head—he remembers something from somewhere other than home.

It goes without saying that this isn't something Niki's ever handled before. The implications are a lot. He isn't sure if he'll be able to handle this delicately, but he's certainly going to try, so he offers a smile in sympathy.]

Ahh, I had a feeling something was up. I kinda thought you smelled a little different.

[Still delicious, though. Make no mistake.]

Are you okay? I mean, right now. Are you hurt or anything?

[Ah, he was worried that saying something so outlandish might burn too many of Shiina-san’s calories. He didn’t want to stress him out more when they were already in such a strange situation.]

…You are very kind, Shiina-san. I… I feel alright, physically. My memory still feels a little hazy in regards to those last moments…

[What had he been doing out there? Certainly…something for Alkaloid. He wished he could remember what made him do something so dangerous. Had it been worth it…?]

The place I was in before, it was frightening and hellish. If the people I meet here do not recall that place …then that is likely for the best.

[A hazy memory, huh... He wonders if that's similar to his current situation. He puts a pin in that thought for now.]

That's a relief. ♪ I can't say I know a lot about that sort of thing... [Dying, he means. Hahaha.] But if you're ever feeling strange, I already know where a decent doctor is. And if you ever wanna talk about anything, I'm here for that, too.

[He can't even begin to imagine what that's like, but that's also why he feels like— it must be something really difficult to have stuck in his head. So offering an ear to listen to him feels like the least he can do.]

Does that mean there are other people who also came from that place?

[He hadn’t expected that. Maybe he should have. Shiina-san has always been very sweet to him even when he acted like he wanted to eat him. It’s something he feels very underserving of, unsurprisingly, but it also touches him.]

[He can feel the tears wanting to come, so he tries to hold them back. He smiles instead.]

Thank you …Shiina-san. Perhaps …I will take you up on that sometime.

[Now doesn’t seem right, they’ve reunited and have a task at hand. He can sort out his emotions later.]

Ah… well, you are the only one I’ve met thus far, and you do not recall that place, so perhaps there are others. There were quite a few of us from ES there.

[For this one, Niki isn't able to hide his surprise.]

Wait, really? I was there?

[While he's willing to accept what Mayoi says about himself at face value, hearing about something he definitely doesn't recall being involved in is really strange.]

Um, I mean, I'm not doubting you. But I don't remember anything like that at all. ...but that feels like a pretty big thing to forget, doesn't it?

[But then again, Rinne...]

[Mayoi does watch his reaction, as if searching for something. When Niki seems to be just as confused as he expected he nods a little.]

[Yeah, that's probably for the best, right?]

N-No, I understand. It must sound unbelievably strange to hear and do not blame you if you don't believe me. frankly I feel crazy thinking about it...

[He shakes his head.]

I-If I hadn't woke up with my clothes and my hair cut the same way [and the scars], I might have assumed it a terrible nightmare. But...

Yes, I remember that all of Crazy:B had been there ...and all of Alkaloid [Sort of. He was working on that.], some of Knights... but if you don't recall, and the last thing I remember is my ah ...my likely demise, then... who could say how this came about...?

Yeah, I don't get it at all~. [He frowns, shaking his head. He can't quite put his finger on it, but it feels like something isn't adding up.] How we ended up here, why we don't remember stuff... How you're even alive at all... I don't know how much I wanna believe the reason we're supposed to be here, either.

[It sounds innocuous enough, but ultimately, they're still here against their will... And if Niki were on his own, he probably wouldn't care as much, but the fact is that he isn't.]

But I wonder if that means the others are here, too? I know Rinne-kun's around.

[That is something else, too. He frowns a bit.]

Frankly, I am growing tired of being toyed with by some higher power. I think...there is nothing wrong with being vigilante in case this place becomes hostile.

[Niki isn't too eager to bring up what Rinne doesn't remember, specifically, because that's a pretty personal thing—Rinne's never liked showing too much of himself. It only feels right to leave it up to Rinne to decide if he wants to talk about it or not.

Niki shrugs.]

I know he's kind of a pain, but I'd really appreciate it if you could help me keep an eye on him. He's always trying to get into trouble when he thinks people aren't looking. Well, also when people are looking, I guess...

But we don't know anything about this place.

[And that's what worries him. If something happens to Rinne, or any of them here, Niki... genuinely isn't sure what he'd do.]

[A bad mood, huh? Well, he'd like to talk to him eventually, so he'll keep an ear out. Rinne is Rinne so he will make himself known eventually. Its a 'when' not an 'if'.]

Oh, don't worry ...I am unfortunately very aware of Rinne-san's troublesome nature. He caused me quite a lot of grief in The Place. At least that hasn't changed.

[He wonders if he's forgotten everything, too. Better to prepare for that, just in case.]

I-I will do my best to be watchful of him. Hopefully ...our worries are unfounded.

Ahaha... [Niki's smile is a sort of nervous one.] That definitely sounds like our Rinne-kun. Sorry about him.

[If Mayoi thinks he might have died, then Niki can't even begin to imagine what sort of "grief" Rinne might have caused in a place like that. A part of him is curious, definitely, but he's also afraid. But... if it's something he can't remember, and somehow, they're all still here, then maybe it's okay if he doesn't ask right now.]

I hope it's nothing, too. I think a lot of people would be pretty upset with me if I let something bad happen to you two! But I'm also glad none of us are alone here, either.
